TikTok can be a powerful marketing tool for brands with younger target customer bases and an entertainment or informational-focused video content strategy. Once you decide to market your CPG brand on TikTok, here are some marketing tactics you can use to maximize your effectiveness.
1. Don't try to sell anything.
TikTok users are extremely sensitive about videos that try to sell them something, and they don't like it much. Your goal for TikTok marketing is for your followers to enjoy your videos and remember your brand name, not to make a direct purchase in the moment. That said, followers are loyal when they do decide they like your videos, so if you can capture their interest, you won't have to work too hard to keep it.
2. Offer value.
While TikTok users don't want a sales pitch, they do want to be entertained and informed. Consider how your TikTok content can offer value to viewers in a way that is related to your products or your brand. You could offer a life hack or create a new dance that is related to your brand or product, but doesn't directly ask anyone to buy anything.
3. Optimize hashtags.
Hashtags on TikTok have a lot to do with how people will find you. You should add multiple hashtags to your posts that correspond to searches for similar topics or products, and if you can link a personality or influencer to your post with a hashtag, so much the better.
4. Look for trending hashtags.
Your hashtags will be even more effective if you get in on trending topics that are currently popular. A quick search using the Discover tab will show you what topics are trending.
5. Find a partner.
Using an influencer or personality in your TikTok marketing campaign is a powerful way to build a following. In many cases, you can piggyback on the influencer's following and gain new followers from theirs. Personalities have the top 10 numbers of followers on TikTok, and the top 40 personalities have at least 10 million followers each. The TikTok Creator Marketplace will show you the breakdown for each influencer.
6. Don't polish videos.
On TikTok, videos with high production value are actually looked down upon. Keep things simple and focus on the content rather than whether it looks professional. Use your cell phone camera and maybe a backlight. Don't edit heavily, but try to get a good take the first time.
7. DIY videos.
DIY videos are immensely popular on TikTok, and it's usually not that difficult to take your product and use it to make something else. If people like the videos and think they have good ideas, they may even buy the product to imitate the video for themselves.
With these marketing tactics, you can succeed in your TikTok marketing efforts and make use of this powerful and growing platform. Hangar12 can help you figure out the best ways to market your CPG brand and products.
